Introduction to UMR

We have always believed in the importance of health research for improving health and health services both in letter and spirit. Our undergraduate research program was initiated at the time of admission of our first MBBS batch in 2006. Students were introduced to the basic principles and methods of medical research in structured lectures and were provided an opportunity of hands-on training - learning by doing. Students were encouraged to evolve their ideas into scientific proposals after appropriate background search. These proposals were carefully supervised and developed into simple cross sectional studies. Once data gathering was complete, basic analysis was taught and carried out by students themselves resulting in inference generation.

It was indeed a breakthrough for all of us at PMC to hold the “First Annual Undergraduate Medical Research Fair – 2007”. 23 poster presentations were included in the Fair from first and second year MBBS students. The undergraduate medical research conference is now a regular annual event in March. Not only our own students from all years present their research projects but students from different medical colleges from all over the country also participate in this event.

Recently, we have developed new, revised curricula for all years of MBBS and BDS. The new curricula are being implemented from year 2018 onward. Our third year students now have a 4-week rotation at the department of UMR during which emphasis is laid on research ethics, skills and proposal development. Our qualified faculty members from basic sciences, clinical sciences and social sciences supervise students’ research projects. Our students are well aware of the importance of research ethics and all research projects have to be approved by the Ethical Review Committee.

We encourage our students to publish their research studies and provide them with necessary guidance. We are very hopeful that combined efforts of our faculty, students and administration will inshaAllah ensure the establishment of research culture based on ethics and professionalism in near future at our colleges.
